Meadowlands Hospital Medical Center Awarded an "A" for Patient Safety

The Leapfrog Group Recognizes Hospital with Highest Patient Safety Grade;
Meadowlands Moves from "C" to "A" Within One Year

SECAUCUS, NJ – October 25th, 2013

Meadowlands Hospital Medical Center (MHMC) was honored with an "A" grade in the Fall 2013 update to The Leapfrog Group’s Hospital Safety Score, which rates how well hospitals protect patients from accidents, errors, injuries and infections. The Hospital Safety Score, compiled under the guidance of the nation’s leading experts on patient safety, is administered by Leapfrog, an independent industry watchdog. The Hospital Safety Score is the first and only hospital safety rating to be analyzed in the peer-reviewed Journal of Patient Safety, and is designed to give the public information they can use to protect themselves and their families.

The majority – 60% – of the safety grades for New Jersey hospitals stayed the same, while only 40% of grades changed. Half of the changed grades changed for the better, and Meadowlands is in the elite group of 20% that improved their ranking.

"Patient safety is at the heart of everything we do and the quality healthcare we provide. This 'A' grade places Meadowlands amongst the top third of hospitals nationwide that were rated and is testament to the commitment of our staff in keeping patients safe and happy while in our care," says Lynn McVey, Acting Chief Executive Officer of MHMC. "Organizational initiatives dedicated to improving quality, safety, and the patient experience have paid off, bringing Meadowlands from a 'C' facility to an 'A' facility across the last 12 months."

Since early 2011, as part of its ongoing efforts to improve patient safety and quality, MHMC has made unprecedented physical and technology upgrades to the facility, implemented staff performance standards to ensure patient safety and quality care, and made operational improvements across the organization to better serve its patients and the community.

"As patients begin to take a more active role in selecting where to receive health care, it has never been more important to focus on hospital safety and transparency. The 'A' hospitals, including Meadowlands Hospital Medical Center, are helping us to raise the standards of health care nationwide," said Leah Binder, President and CEO of Leapfrog. In addition to this recognition from Leapfrog, Meadowlands commitment to quality and patient safety is evident through recent recognitions from Healthgrades and from Hospital Compare, a program of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. In 2011 and 2012, Healthgrades gave its renowned 5-Star Rating to Meadowlands for Gall Bladder Surgery outcomes. In 2012, Hospital Compare recognized Meadowlands as the highest ranked hospital in Hudson County for doctors and nurses and the highest ranked hospital in New Jersey, and above the national average, for cleanliness.
